No Comments Sub Category:Chennai,Cities,Realty News Posted On: Dec 28, 2012

Chennai- A skywalk will soon be constructed over Poonamallee High Road which will connect eight locations on either side of the arterial road.

According to the present design this skywalk will cover a distance of 600 mts and will connect Chennai Central station, the Mooe Market complex, Pallavan Salai, Wall Tax Road, Government General Hospital, Evening Bazaar and Fort station. Earlier Rippon Buildings and Park Station were also to be connected but the proposal got modified due to Chennai Metrorail  alignment.

For this purpose, the Highway department is waiting for the consent of Southern Railway. Their concurrence is required as the construction will be held inside their premises along with utilization of their space for landing facilities. Due to no response from the Railway department the project is on hold for a year.

As soon as the Highway department gets consent it will write to the PWD because the Government General Hospital is being maintained by it. The facilities includes escalators and staircases for pedestrians, elevators  in Hospital which will cost Rs 30 crore to the department. It would take almost a year to construct these facilities.

President  of “All India Rail and Bus Passengers” Welfare Association  feels that the completion of this skywalk will be very useful to all passengers. He highlighted the importance of skywalk in Kolkata and suggested that areas like Valluvar Kottam and Udhayam Theatre junction at Ashok Nagar can also be considered for such a facility.
