centralised gas supplyThiruvallur- Apartment complexes under Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) are soon to get centralized gas supply. This concept has been implemented in many complexes, malls and star hotels.

TNHB is planning to experiment this on a project in Nerkundram. They will supply reticulated network of pipelines to 1,016 residential units of this project which are under construction.

The cost of this project is around Rs 400 crore. It will also include those 608 apartments which will be constructed for all India Services officers. The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board is also giving a thought to this concept.

TNHB is planning to set meters at stilt level of residential complex having multiple storeys. A common pipeline will then supply gas to all units. This will resolve the problems of residents like waiting for gas cylinder, no fear of gas leakage etc. Moreover, the occupied space of gas cylinder can also be utilized for other purpose.

In this regard, the officials of TNHB did a detailed research of this system like they spoke to many users, went to several apartment complexes, investigated about its usage and problems involved during installation.

During their study the officials found that people are not facing any problems because maintenance was done at regular basis. For this purpose apartment residents are paying a small service charge. Also due to exposure to sunlight and evaporation, a small amount of gas is lost. But the residents are happily bearing this cost over other advantages.

According to an official, maintenance of this system by the residential welfare association is very important. Also if residents are willing to pay charges for maintenance and conversion of gas, then this system will work well. The charges are very affordable. For example; in a residential complex having 100 units, this system would cost between Rs. 11,500 and Rs. 14,500 per household. An additional expense will be civil works.
