Porur lakeChennai-Finally nearly after a year, the three lakes of the city in Porur, Ayanambakkam near Thiruverkadu and Nemam near Chembarambakkam will get new lease of life.

The order for rejuvenating the water bodies was given by the Tamil Nadu government. This project will not only increase drinking water sources but will also recharge groundwater table in the localities of Chennai city.

The Water Resource department (WRD) has initiated the process. The residents of Chennai want to hasten this process to protect the water bodies from more degradation.

The Water Resource Department will also increase the water capacity of the of the lake in Cholavaram. The water capacity of this water body in Cholavaram will be increased by 600 million cubic feet (mcft) to meet the growing water needs of the city. The reservoir is already set up there.

Due to no takers for the tender, the work to rejuvenate the three water bodies have been delayed. The department is planning to desilt and deepen the water bodies by two meters resulting into increased storage capacity by 44mcft. Currently 1,000 mcft is being drawn from the city reservoirs to supply 830 million litres a day.

Porur lake is the most dirty among the three. Ayanambakkam and Nemam lake are exploited by the private water suppliers. Illegal soil mining is also very common there. The residents of Ayanambakkam and Porur area are also demanding to secure the lakes from further encroachment and misuse.

Encroachments have been taken away from the Anambakkam tank. The families were compensated by alternate land in  Morai near Avadi. If the department does not speed up the work, several surrounding localities like Dinesh Nagar and New Century Nagar may again witness floods.

The cost of this project is Rs 129 crore and is expected to complete in 18 months.
