Two-day nationwide strike to hit services
India is to witness a nationwide strike on Wednesday and Thursday. Bank services are likely to be on halt, auto rickshaws will be widely affected on both days. However, BMTC and KSRTC services are likely to be hit only on the first day.
What is the reason for the strike?
The strike has been called by 11 major trade unions, including the CITU, in protest against price spiral, public sector disinvestment, FDI in retail, BJP-backed BMS and Congress-backed INTUC and several other issues.
A few small private sector banks and most public sector banks are likely to be affected on those days. The United Forum of Bank Union, including officers are going to participate in the strike.
Seven major auto rickshaw unions, including the Adarsha Auto and Taxi Drivers’ Union and Karnataka Association for Auto rickshaws, will not function on both days. Auto rickshaw unions are mainly protesting against the alleged harassment by police.
KSRTC Staff Workers Federation said that they are going to participate in the strike because they are against the recent hike in diesel prices, giving private operators the edge over public transport utilities.
A spokesman for the Karnataka United School & Light Motor Vehicle Drivers’ Union said around 22,000 school buses will not run on both the days. The strike is in protest against inflation, especially that of food and basic commodities. More than 10 lakh workers from all over the state will participate in the strike.
80,000 autos will be off the street, so a local cab service named Olacabs has offered its cabs in Bangalore at auto fares. The strike will harm the commuters who travel regularly by autos, which includes children, women as well as senior citizens.
