Opening of Kalindi Kunj Bridge comes as relief for commuters
The opening of Kalindi Kunj Bridge has not only come as a relief for thousands of commuters, but senior Delhi traffic police officers also said that they are relaxed as the situation has become better than before the repairs began.
For the last two months, commuters have been facing massive traffic issues across different routes connecting Noida and Delhi due to the repair of the bridge’s Noida-Delhi carriageway. The other carriageway was closed for repair for one month from December 23.
Noida traffic police officers admit that the bridge’s innate engineering faults will continue to hamper traffic movement during peak hours. The much-needed repair has ensured that for the time being, commuters will have a smooth ride on the bridge after almost 30 years. While the central verge, lying broken for the past three years, has been repaired, the heavily encroached pavement has been cleared and repaired.
However, the u-turn at the beginning of the bridge on the Noida-Delhi side right opposite the Noida police’s Okhla Barrage chowki remains open. The sudden cut at the mouth of the bridge has been a cause of consequent traffic jams.
Retro-reflective safety devices such as cat’s eyes haven’t been installed. Uttar Pradesh PWD officials said minor works like making road lines and welding parts of the fencing are left and would be completed while keeping the bridge open. They assured that doing this will not slow down traffic.
