Commuters annoyed as Kalindi Kunj bridge closed for repairs
New Delhi- As a carriageway of the Kalindi Kunj bridge has been closed for repairs, travelling has become an issue to commuters.
The commuters who used to spend hardly forty minutes to travel from Faridabad to Nehru Place even during peak hours, have been spending around two-three hours. Many of them have started taking alternate routes, as a result of which traffic congestion has become most common in several areas. Large trucks and goods carriers that block up half the road space adds to the problem.
Arterial roads connecting South Delhi with areas in the east and the north, and Delhi with Noida remain choked. The scenario is expected to continue for a month more, since the bridge’s Delhi-Noida carriageway is closed till January 23.
The commuters are blaming traffic police for their inefficiency in managing traffic properly. Traffic constables struggle to direct vehicles through diversions and break traffic jams. Intersections at Mathura Road, Ashram, Nehru Place and Nizamuddin witnessed heavy traffic.
An underpass aimed at reducing traffic congestion at Noida-Okhla is already under construction which is bothering Sarita Vihar residents. Adding to their woes, the Kalindi Kunj bridge work has also been started.
Since many prime hospitals like Fortis Escorts Heart Institute at Okhla, Holy Family Hospital and Apollo hospital are connected through Mathura Road (NH-2), people are worried that the traffic jams may turn fatal.
The Delhi traffic police have closed the 28-year-old Kalindi Kunj bridge for two months based on the request by Public Works Department (PWD). Since half of Kalindi Kunj bridge is closed, most of the traffic is diverted to the Noida DND, which is now witnessing massive lines at the toll plaza. The average waiting time of five minutes has increased to at least half an hour.
As per official sources, construction on the bridge’s Delhi-Noida stretch will be completed by January 22, following which another carriageway will be closed from January 23 to February 24.
