BMC invites external audit for infra projects

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Mumbai,Municipality Posted On: Feb 22, 2013

BMCMumbai- After a delay of several days, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited expression of interest (EoI) to be chosen as the external third party auditors for the civic infrastructure projects from the private firms.

With this move, all the capital works like the reconstruction and repair of the civic school and hospitals along with the bridge construction, water supply, sewerage networks, storm water drains, treatment plants and gardens will be brought under the external audits.

Currently, the audits of all the road projects are conducted by a BIC-appointed Switzerland-based private firm which also acts as a check on work done by contractors. According to the  additional municipal commissioner (projects), the beginning and the compete execution of the project, the third party auditors will be closely monitoring the contractors work. The auditors will furnish the reports based on the inspections of the existing third-party road project audits.

Despite the date being announced as last year, the civic body is yet struggling to introduce the system as it has to find enough firms to start these audits. However, there were insufficient response to the EoIs which were invited up in February 15. Owing to this, they have extended their deadline until February 28 for all the companies who can send in their documents.

However, as per experts, it is important that the audit reports should be translated into effective measures which can improve civic services. They stated that it was mandatory to further the third-party audits in departments which involve high capital expenditures. They should initiate actions to introduce systemic reforms out of reports created by the external auditors.
