30 properties in Pune sealed for not paying property tax

SealingPimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has recently sealed about 30 properties in the city for not paying property tax in time.

The property tax department of the civic body had already sent notices to these properties in Pune and 353 prominent defaulters had been reminded for not paying the taxes in the given time frame.

Around 30 properties have been sealed by the corporation which owe approximately Rs 70 lakh to the PCMC. The sealed properties will be auctioned later if the defaulters fail to clear their dues.

PCMC has planned to give a concession of 10% for residential properties and 5% for commercial properties, if the tax is paid before June 30, 2013. A surcharge of 2% will be taken if the bi-annual property tax is not paid within the stipulated period.

Till date, around Rs 231.44 crore has been collected for this financial year.

Earlier, the civic body had announced that ex-servicemen, freedom fighters and women property holders in Pimpri Chinchwad will get a rebate of 50% in their property tax from the coming fiscal year.

However, this scheme is only applicable to only one property in case anyone has multiple properties.

The property tax department of PCMC had proposed a minimum hike of 4% and a maximum of 13% in various taxes to be collected for 2013-14.

Also, the municipal commissioner has alleged that PCMC gets 70% of its income from octroi and the remaining percent comes from property and other taxes. He also said that the octroi will be abolished from April 1, 2013, and will be replaced by Local Body Tax (LBT).

If octroi had been there for next year, then the body claims to have collected Rs 1500 crore. A deficit of Rs 200- 300 crore will be faced if LBT is implemented. This is the reason to increase the rates of properties in Pune to increase the revenue.
