Garbage segregation violators to be penalized
To end the garbage crisis in Bangalore and other places, the Karnataka government has revised the Karnataka Municipal Corporation(KMC) Act, 1976, and has permitted the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to penalize denizens who are not segregating waste at source.
The government has decided to implement a fine of Rs 500 but Rs 100 for the first time. Joint secretary of HSR Layout Residents’ Welfare Association, Sector V, said that they will hold meeting in which they will demonstrate segregation of waste at source. The Residents’ Welfare Association will also educate the civic officials and request them not to collect mixed waste.
To solve the garbage problem, residents have to segregate the waste. Garbage segregation violators will be penalized. The BBMP should not collect waste which is not segregated. The government is planning to announce a bill so that they can be levied fines against both bulk generators and households.
Last year December, the State legislature had passed Municipal Solid Waste Rules but imposing fine was not brought in. However, according to sources, the proposal to amend the KMC Act was tabled before the Cabinet. According to the Municipal Solid Waste Rules both bulk generators of garbage and householders can be fined for violations.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has decided to form a team to collar offenders who burn waste, dump garbage, urinate in public places, etc. The team will be positioned at key locations to cover as much of the city as possible.
The teams will be formed under the guidance of zonal commissioners in the eight zones of BBMP. The zonal commissioners will have a separate meeting to discuss about the implementation of fines to be imposed on garbage segregation violators.
