Solution urgent for Bangalore’s garbage menace!
The BBMP officials are trying hard to find a solution for the uncleared garbage in the city. A permanent solution needs to be found to manage the estimated 3,500 tonne waste generated in the city.
The residents of Mavallipura and Mandur have made it clear that they wont allow Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to dump anymore garbage in the landfills in their villages.
Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) has organised a symposium titled “Solutions to impending public health crisis through governance in Solid Waste Management (SWM) to find a solution for the garbage issues. It was attended by several high profile people including MPs from Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, BBMP officials, and along with them, citizens and other experts.
The citizens attended the symposium were more focused on highlighting the basic flaws in the system. Lack of proper planning and leadership were the major issues, said a politician. Another politician proposed setting up of a dedicated Solid Waste Management Committee. The BBMP commissioner said he is ready to withdraw the garbage cess levied on the bulk generators if they are willing to manage the solid waste themselves.
Every speaker present in the symposium stressed on the need to segregate and process solid waste within the city and not depend on landfills elsewhere.
A higher official of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) said that many companies are coming forward with proposals to set up waste processing centres, but are not able to find suitable land close to the city to set up such units. The interaction happened to draw attention to the long term impact of the status of the garbage management especially on health with the risk of epidemics increasing.
