Decision to Construct Tunnel sparked Resentment
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) on Tuesday announced plans to appoint a consultant for preparing a project report on theĀ Mumbai-Pune expressway tunnel plan between Khopoli and Lonavla.
The decision to construct a 11-km-long tunnel, between Khopoli and Lonavla, on the Mumbai-Pune expressway has sparked resentment across the Konkan region. The construction of the tunnel will separate the old four-lane Pune highway and the new six-lane expressway, between Khopoli and Lonavla, said an MSRDC official. The project will reduce accidents and congestion on the expressway, a official added.
“The Mumbai-Goa highway is witnessing fatal accidents everyday, why is the state ignoring expansion of this highway,” said a spokesperson of the Goa Highway Expansion Committee (GHEC).
We are not against the expansion of the Pune highway, but the state must understand our needs. Delay in expansion of the two-lane Goa highway is causing road mishaps,” said S M Deshmukh, a journalist from Raigad.”Between January to July, there have been 96 accidents on the Goa highway’s stretch in Raigad district resulting in 89 deaths and 348 persons sustained serious injuries. GHEC members have decided to block the Mumbai-Goa highway on August 15.
