Pune Standing committee members demanded Special GB meet on water shortage
Pune has for long been facing the problem of unequal distribution of water, with core areas getting more water than the fringe areas.Experts in water management have reiterated the need for metered water supply in the city, which, they feel, will ensure that people pay for the actual amount of water they use.
Due to water irregularities in various parts of the city, the committee members have come down on the civic administration on Tuesday asking to call a special general body meeting to discuss this long-pending problem.
NCP corporator and a member of the standing committee Ashwini Kadam said, “Since Thursday, Sahakarnagar, Padmavati and Aranyeshwar have not received water. The PMC has stopped supply without any prior notice. Despite repeated complaints, the PMC and the water department have not responded.”
“The feelings of corporators were poignant and the civic administration had no answers to the issues raised by corporators in Tuesday’s meeting. This is a serious issue and despite all discussions in the standing committee and the general body, the problem remains unsolved. All corporators have urged the mayor to call a special general body meeting to take stock of the situation,” said standing committee chairman Ganesh Bidkar, on Tuesday.
Puneites receive 314 litre per capita per day drinking water as against the set norms of 150 LPCD. In spite of high average consumption of water per head, certain areas received very low and inequitable water supply due to design deficiencies in the overall water supply system, especially in the old distribution networks.
The PMC had announced that in 2011, it will shift its attention to augmenting the city’s water supply system and rigorously implement the Master Plan 2025, which seeks to fulfill the water needs of the city till 2025.
One of the major project which still remains on paper is that of bringing water from Bhama Askhed.
The plan was first announced by the then municipal commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi while tabling the 2008-09 budget.
