HC asked CMDA Chennai to Submit Report on Actions taken against Unauthorized Constructions
A court-appointed monitoring committee which met on July 15 had recommended disconnection of amenities and cancellation of trade licenses in Chennai. It decided to look into the possibilities of sealing unauthorized portions to take up demolition. It also recommended the formation of a special task force with different local body officials to take action against these buildings.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) should submit a report to the Madras high court within a month on actions they have taken against unauthorized constructions in the city, the first bench has ruled. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing on September 12.
Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam said the status report should give details about the number of buildings for which electricity and water supply have been disconnected and trade licenses have been cancelled. They added that petitions challenging demolition notices, disconnection of electricity or water supply and cancellation of trade licenses should be posted before it.
The court passed the order on a batch of petitions by T Solomon, a resident of Choolai, and by Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group. While the former sought a direction to remove unauthorized constructions in Choolai, the remaining two petitions dealt with a state ordinance regularizing unauthorized constructions.
