The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to distribute eco-friendly Ganesha idols for the forthcoming Ganesh festival. The HMDA is taking the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and other colleges for distribution of the clay Ganeshas. HMDA will give incentives for eco-friendly Ganesh pandals and sarvajanic idols for Vinayaka Chathurthi 2010.

Some organisations like Society for Awareness and Vision on Environment (SAVE) have made about 50,000 idols of eight inches each and 500 big idols of 4.5 feet size with eco-friendly materials with the support of the metropolitan development authority. SAVE made smaller idols for devotees to take home and for the Pandals 500 big idols have been made.

HMDA metropolitan commissioner Rajeshwar Tiwari said in a press release that a pledge to protect water bodies would be taken on one of the days (September 9, 10 and 11) by local people in surrounding colonies of various water bodies in the city.

The idols would be sold to citizens at 50 per cent subsidised rates. For instance, an eight-inch idol would be sold at Rs 10 and big idol (4.5 feet) at about Rs 1,000. HMDA has decided to open distribution centres at 51 locations near 38 major water bodies in Greater Hyderabad. These distribution centres will be opened for public on September 9, 10 and 11.
