Chennai Residents at a Mercy of Stench

No Comments Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Sep 14, 2011

The residents of Chennai have been facing issues related to garbage which is not getting frequently dumped outskirts by the municipal workers. The residents, however, say that the warning board has not been effective though. “Several restaurants illegally dump their waste at midnight and the street lights have not been working for a while. Women cannot walk on these stretches after sunset. As if these are not enough, stray dogs too threaten the locals,” says Jaya Lakshmi, one of the commuters.

Local councilor Lalita Shanmugham reported saying, “dumping of garbage in public places should not be encouraged and it required stringent action. The garbage mound on the Thiru Valluvar Salai stretch near Ramapuram in Porur has left the lives of hundreds of residents at the mercy of stench, mosquitoes and health hazards. After repeated complaints, the panchayat put up a warning board cautioning them against dumping waste there or incur a fine of Rs 500″.

Whenever the garbage pile increases, some residents set it afire resulting in severe respiratory problems. Seepage from the dump yard has also polluted the ground water as well, residents say. They allege that the bore wall water is dark in color, stinks and is completely unfit for drinking. The dump yard has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes during rainy seasons.
