Trees to give way for stage in Kolkata

No Comments Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Oct 22, 2011

Deshapriya Park Kolkata is fast loosing its green cover with many of the projects happening in and around it. In the recent case some four trees were felled by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to provide space for the proposed revolving stage. The construction of the stage was sanctioned from the MPLad funds of former Trinamool Congress MP Mamata Banerjee. Residents and activists are demanding that there should be no more felling of trees in the park requesting the officials of the civic body to not to uproot trees for the sake of a cultural stage.

The West Bengal forest department had earlier granted the permission to the KMC on condition that the uprooted trees should be transplanted within the precinct of Deshapriya Park. The civic body officials had agreed to the decree after which four trees were uprooted around the space that was reserved for the stage. The KMC could transplant only two of the trees while the whereabouts of the other two could not be found. Many residents feel that the transplantation won’t save the trees.
