No steps to save saplings in Kolkata

No Comments Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Nov 02, 2011

It has come to the notice of the citizens in Kolkata that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) isn’t doing much to arrest the green cover of the city. Though there was much hue and cry initially to plant saplings,  however when it comes to taking care of those saplings, the KMC has not shown any effort to do so. Recently in July, Chief Minister,  Mamta Bannerjee  started the campaign to protect the greens in the city and asked the state forest department and KMC officials to take adequate care of the 100,000 saplings that were planted during forest-week in the city.

However to the utter failure of the authorities it has come to notice that almost half of those saplings have already died or are in a process of decay. This can be blamed due to lack of tree guards. It is seen in many areas where the saplings were planted like CIT Road (Park Circus), EM Bypass no measure were taken to guard the saplings even though a whopping sum of Rs 25 lakh were to provide  to buy iron tree guards.
