Aasra housing scheme for urban poor launched in Rampur

Housing schemeUttar Pradesh Urban Development minister Azam Khan has launched the “Aasra housing scheme” by laying the foundation stone of 120 housing units for urban poor in his home district Rampur.

The houses will be constructed on Nainital road in Rampur. The scheme is being executed by the State Urban Development Agency (SUDA) under the Department of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, held by Khan.

Aasra housing scheme is aimed towards providing free houses to urban poor whose monthly income is below Rs 6,000. The houses are planned to be developed on ground plus two floors. Spreading across an area of 25 square meter, each house will have a room, a verandah, kitchen and a bathroom. The estimated cost for each house in the project is Rs 2.5 lakh.

The beneficiaries under the scheme will be those living in minority dominated slums whose monthly income is upto Rs 6000, such as registered rickshaw pullers, OBC and SC category people who do not own any house and possess BPL card and released manual scavengers. It is mandatory that none of the family members of the beneficiary does not own a house in urban area.

The selection of allottees will be done through inviting applications followed by a lottery draw. The allottees will be in a lock-in period of 15 years, during which they will not be allowed to sell the houses, but can transfer the houses to their legal successors.

Under the Aasra scheme, 25 percent of the total budget has been earmarked for the development of infrastructure facilities.

Azam also said that the Aasra scheme will be implemented across the state and presently land has been made available in only 15 districts.
