Corporation to act against Building lacking sewage connection
The Madras High Court has directed the Chennai Corporation to take appropriate action within four weeks against a building owner for running a service apartment without drainage and sewage connections. A private firm building which is being used as a service apartment does not have sewage and drainage connection, so the owner clears the sewage through private lorries daily from the sump was leading to unbearable smell and posing health hazards to residents of T Nagar.
Justice K N Basha gave the directive while passing orders on a writ petition filed by T G Rajagopalan of Crescent Park Street in T Nagar Chennai. According to the petitioner, a building, run by a private firm Star City, adjacent to his house, which is being used as a service apartment on daily and monthly rental basis, does not have sewage and drainage connection. The owner clears the sewage through private lorries daily from the sump. The pumping out of sewage from the sump to the lorries was leading to unbearable smell and posing health hazards to the entire area.
The petitioner said he sent representations to the Chennai Corporation to stop the menace but no effective action was taken. The Chennai Corporation submitted that it had sent a notice directing the owner to obtain sewage and drainage connections forthwith, otherwise penalty would be imposed. But the firm had replied saying that it could not apply for the connections since its application for regularization of construction of the building was pending, the civic body told the court.
