A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by the villagers of Luni village of Mundra taluk in Kutch district. They were protesting against gauchar (grazing) land given to the Adani Group for its Special Economic Zone. The Gujarat High Court on Thursday disposed of this case.

During the pendency of the application, filed in 2011, the Gujarat Government had decided to reserve over 85 hectare of land for the cattle’s grazing purpose in the village Luni. The government took into account the present cattle population of 522 in Luni and projections for the next ten years, at 574 cattle. They applied the principle of 16 hectare of land for every 100 cattle.

The High Court bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice JB Pardiwala observed this and directed the State Government to handover the actual possession of the stated land. This should be done within a month and the Panchayat concerned should take the possession of the land is what was mentioned in the directive of the court. Considering the government action in the matter, the court stated that the petitioners cannot have any further grievance, with regard to the allotment of the grazing land.

However the bench gave the verdict in favour of the Adani group. The decision came as a major relief to the Adani Group owned Adani Port and SEZ Ltd (APSEZ).
