AP to come up with nuclear power project
The State Government of Hyderabad has announced that the first ever nuclear power project will be set up in Andhra Pradesh.
About 5 villages were shortlisted in the North coastal district of Srikakulam to set up the project.
Five years ago, it was decided that the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) had declared to initiate about 6,000 mw power plant of light water reactors at Kovvada. The decision to set up a nuclear power plant will facilitate the government’s land acquisition unit by helping them to acquire 2,436 acre for the project.
However, the land will be divided for the power plant and a township for the staff alongside providing housing sites for displaced families. Unfortunately, the recent Fukushima Nuclear power plant tragedy and political protests have stalled the project initiation by both the state government and the NCPIL leading a delay in land acquisition.
NPCIL chairman and managing director SK Jain assured the protesters that they have taken safety measures concerning the Fukushima tragedy.
