BBMP Comes Up With Garbage Cess
The proposal of charging a cess for garbage will soon be implemented if the proposals of the finance and taxation committee of BBMP are approved. The committee will meet Today (on Tuesday) to discuss this and other issues relating to solid waste management such as review proposals on garbage disposal and the process of initiating tenders for it.
The BBMP officials say that the cess ensures revenue generation from the garbage disposed off in the City. The present proposal has fixed rates at Rs. 10 for houses measuring up to 1,000 sq ft, Rs. 30 for those under 3,000 sq ft and Rs. 50 for those above that.
For commercial establishments, the charges are Rs. 50 up to 1,000 sq ft, Rs. 100 for those under 5,000 sq ft and Rs. 200 for those above that. The highest cess of Rs 7,200 per year is proposed on hotels, nursing homes and marriage halls with an area of over 5,000 sq feet.
As for the garbage cess, committee chairperson P.N. Sadashiva said there was provision in the JNNURM guidelines for it.However, street vendors will not be brought under the bracket as they do not fall under the property tax net.
The cess is likely to raise the bars of cleanliness and also ensure more responsibility on the BBMP to clear the daily pile up of garbage across the City. The committee has scheduled a meeting today to examine proposals on solid waste management. If the proposals of the committee of BBMP are approved, city dwellers will soon be made to cough up more for garbage disposal.
