BBMP identifies land to process waste

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Apr 01, 2013

BBMPFinally, the BBMP has realised that solid waste management (SWM) is not the sole responsibility of bulk generators.

Realising its mistake, the BBMP, in association with the Bengaluru Hotels’ Association, other commercial bulk waste generators and an agency entrusted to process the waste (Noble Exchange), has identified around 20 acres of land to process waste in four parts of the city. To process waste, a tripartite agreement will be made shortly.

Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels’ Association president said that, bulk generators will be paid tipping fee of 90 paise per kilogram to the company which transports waste and processes it.

Already lands have been marked at Kannahalli near K.R. Puram, Chikkanagamangala near Anekal, Koodlu near Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC), and Lakshmipura near Bommanahall, said BBMP Joint Commissioner.

The BBMP will help the waste processing company to get land on a long-term lease. The waste management system will be connected to trade license and all traders should make sure that they do not transfer the waste to BBMP trucks. The agreement is expected to take a final shape in the first week of April.

The BBMP targets to clean around 1, 200 million tonnes of waste with the initiative. Per day the city generates approximately 4,000 MT of waste.

Noble Exchange, a Mumbai based agency had agreed to accept garbage and process it. Noble exchange is planning to set up bio- methanisation plants and bottling plants. It will be allowed to sell the by-products that will likely to cater to the needs of hoteliers.

However, the whole responsibility cannot be given to bulk generators alone. BBMP has to do their part. The tripartite agreement will share the responsibility on all the three stakeholders and the initiative is expected to be successful.

Bulk generators have agreed to pay 90 paise/kg for transportation which applies only to commercial bulk generators. Apartment dwellers should still process waste on their own.
