Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials have recently launched an initiative to do away with the illegal Optical Fibre Cables (OFC) in parts of Bangalore like Singapur, Abbigere and  Dasarahalli. Some cyber cafes and around 200 residents had to bear the burnt of this action. BBMP had given its consent to the laying of two kilometres of OFC however some 15 kilometres were infact laid, flouting the norms. Officials had used an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to measure the length of OFC’s. Mayor Sharadamma had said that they had given ample time to the OFC service providers to provide proper information sought by the BBMP regarding the actual cables being laid. He claimed that the service providers have actually cheated the BBMP  as well as the inhabitants of Bangalore by providing baseless figures.

She also said that the offenders will be looked upon seriously and will attract huge penalties. She also censured the ward engineers for the loopholes. Tata Teleservices was the worst hit company because of this disconnection drive. Rajasimha the technical advisor to the BBMP remarked that since the OFC providers are using BBMP property, they are eligible to pay all the necessary encumbrances pertaining this. He informed that a fine of Rs 900 will be imposed on every metre of illegally laid cable. The fine will generate an amount of around Rs 4,000 crore. The service providers will also be liable to pay a rent of Rs 120 per metre every month.
