BBMP setting perfect example by implementing rainwater harvesting

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is setting the perfect example by implementing rainwater harvesting. BBMP commissioner Siddaiah said the civic body is implementing the project at its head office at a cost of Rs45 lakh. The BBMP is also implementing rainwater harvesting in playgrounds, parks, public places and buildings. The BBMP is expecting 3 crore litres of water for harvesting. Through harvesting, Palike can meet water requirement for 333 days of the year.

After declaring the current financial year as the ‘Water Year’, BBMP is setting the perfect example by implementing rainwater harvesting at its head office to recharge the ground water and achieve self-sufficiency. BBMP pays at least Rs18 lakh to BWSSB every year as water bill. It is also spending Rs4 lakh for operation maintenance and Rs1 lakh for other expenses.

The palike is implementing roof and surface harvesting. In roof harvesting, the rain water, which will be collected from the main building, annexure building and the newly constructed six-storey building, will be connected to the two collection pits and excess water will be directed to the recharging pit.

“There are five lakh shoulder drains in the BBMP jurisdiction and we are digging up five lakh percolation pits in the shoulder drains which will be used to recharge ground water,” Siddaiah said. Percolation pits to be dug near trees in tree parks will be open during monsoon but closed during other seasons. This will provide moisture to the roots of the trees throughout the year.

Under surface water harvesting, water will be directed to the recharging pit which will be dug next to the four borewells in the BBMP premises. The filtered water will percolate into the ground. The 12,00,000 litre capacity swimming pool, located near the council building, where the rainwater is collected, will be used for providing water to the parks and toilets.

According to GS Girishetty, assistant executive engineer of multipurpose engineering division, BBMP head office has 10 acres and 7 guntas or 43,926 sqmt of land. The premises has 33,728 sqmt of open land and 10,198 sqmt of roof area. The total area includes 9,687 sqmt of road and 23,313 sqmt of park and garden. “In one week, tender will be floated and by June, the work will be completed,” Girishetty said.
