BBMP to ban smoking in public from November 9
In a drive against selling tobacco, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to stop selling tobacco and cigarettes within a 100-metre radius of educational institutions. Even smoking in public places will be restricted from November 9.
A proper legal notice was filed, around 87 cases under Section 4 and 68 cases under Section 6 of Control of Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, and collected 22,100 as penalty between January and June 2012.
Public smoking falls under Section (4) of COTPA. Public place defines as any place in which the public has access which includes auditoriums, hospital buildings, railway waiting rooms, amusement centers, public offices, court buildings, educational institutions, libraries, coffee houses, canteens, banks, clubs and open spaces surrounding hotels and restaurants.
Even the access to buy is restricted by the age. The BBMP will also look that no one gets indulged into smoking inside the BBMP head office premises.
