Bihar Government grants separate buses for Women Passengers

No Comments Sub Category:Community,Municipality Posted On: Oct 17, 2011

In an effort to do away with the inconvenience faced by female passengers using public transport, the Bihar state government has come with a novel idea of an all women run bus service in fixed routes in the state capital Patna. The move was prompted by the government after a number of complaints emerged of how women in the state were getting harassed while commuting. Replicating the model with a private transport company in Kolkata, who were the first to launch such a service, the service has female conductors. The buses will also be an eye-candy in the roads as the buses are painted in bright pink. The government has outsourced the bus service to Eden Transport Private Limited.

The service providers say that they have seen a promising response among the females and there is a steady increase in the number of women commuters. The buses are loaded with 32 passenger capacity with enough space for passengers to stand. The service had said that though at present the drivers are males it hopes to start the trend of women drivers soon. The government hopes that the service will not only offer great convenience to female commuters but will also provide employment to many women. Recently there has been a provision recently included that males can also board the bus if they are accompanying the women.
