Biomedical waste to be segregated at residences
Bangalore- All residents are likely to be asked not to mix up biomedical waste with municipal solid waste.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning on making it mandatory to segregate biomedical waste generated by residences.
The Palike would authorise agencies to deal with biomedical waste and it will be ensured that residents give away such waste separately.
Along with rising cases of diabetes, many people are getting used to taking insulin injections at home. Most of such insulin used syringes are being dumped in common dustbins and pourakarmikas pick up the garbage which is later sent to landfills. Apart from the syringes, there are other regular home-generated biomedical waste such as bandage swabs, sanitary napkins, leftover capsules and tablets, tablet pouches, syrup bottles and ointment canisters.
Around 4,000 tonnes of solid waste is being generated everyday in Bangalore of which 2 percent is biomedical waste produced by hospitals and households.
BBMP will shortly direct all apartments in Bangalore to ensure that they tie up with agencies authorised to collect biomedical waste.
