BMC identifies buildings built on water pipes
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a survey in every ward to identify buildings which have been constructed on top of water pipelines in the city.
Recently, a major water pipeline under a building in Govandi has bursted which took life of a resident leading the civic body to go on with this move.
Now, two other such buildings have been identified present in Jogeshwari and Andheri.
The building in Jogeshwari is a trauma care centre which is constructed by the civic body itself and this property in Andheri is a residential space constructed under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.
Once the survey is completed, corrective measures will be taken to remove such pipelines present underneath buildings. This also includes diverting water supply after another pipeline is laid.
One week time span has been given to the officials in the ward to identify such plots and compile a report. After the reports are out, work will be initiated on the diversion of water supply through an alternative pipeline.
The pipeline which bursted recently was a 40 year old one present under an eight-storey building.
A four-member committee has been appointed to carry out the review of the accident and present the reports. It was found that water continued to flow through the 24-inch pipeline after two years of it being put out of use.
