BMC plans to revise water supply demand blueprint

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to prepare a demand management policy following the complaints of inadequate water supply in large parts of the city.
BMC is planning to approach Madhav Chitale, hydraulic expert for advice and a blueprint. The blueprint will have alterations that need to be made in the system so that the gap between the supply and the demand can be linked as the data available with the civic body is ancient and need to be revised.
According to the report, the civic body supplies 3,400 million litres daily where as Mumbai needs 4,200 million litres of water daily. It is said that the Middle Vaitarna Dam will be functional next year and this dam will add more 455 MLD of water to the city.
Chitale said that that water needs would increase by 5,400 MLD as the population would be 1.65 crore by 2021. Chitale had given suggestions to enhance the water supply network. But not many ended up implemented. Rajiv Jalota, municipal commissioner said they will approach Chitale soon.
