BMC to buy machinery to avoid manual cleaning
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to buy sewage cleaning and processing machines to do away with manual cleaning. The sewer cleaning machines and high capacity suction units will be used to avoid manual contact with garbage.
This initiative has been taken by the civic body witnessing several conservancy workers who have to clean the sewer lines manually, due to which they suffer from several health hazards.
BMC has also proposed to get high power suction units along with high capacity suction cum jetting units with recycling facility for main sewer divisions.
An approximate budget of Rs 26 crore has been assigned for the procurement of the machines and the whole process.
BMC has also decided to buy a drying machine of worth Rs 4 crore for drying up of garbage taken from open slits which is needed before its disposal. This action has been taken after the civic body received many complaints from residents about the health hazards caused due to this.
Earlier this year, BMC had passed a new garbage collection scheme to keep the city’s slum clean.
This new scheme has been introduced to keep a check and break the monopoly of present contractors who are appointed under the old scheme and to ensure better garbage collection services in slums.
The new scheme called the Swachcha Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan will replace the old one – Dattak Vasti Yojana and will be introduced in February. The old scheme was first passed in 2001 by the civic body in Mumbai city.
The civic body has assured that with the introduction of the new scheme, more stringent guidelines will be in place.
Also, BMC is planning to install dustbins along the drains in the city to prevent slum dwellers from dumping garbage into nullahs.
These bins will be installed in 400 spots around the city after the civic body carries a nullah cleaning drive before monsoon to clean the city’s garbage.
Around 400 spots have been identified by the engineering services department and a list has been sent to the solid waste management department.
