BMC to increase water supply in Mumbai
The Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), plans to restructure its water supply system to ensure equitable supply to all areas in the city.
The BMC has decided that each person in the city should get at least 135 litres of water per day. Earlier, in 2009, it had set 90 litres per capita per day (LPCD) as the limit due to scarcity.
People living in new constructions are to benefit from this move. Post 2009, the BMC had slashed the water supply norm to these buildings, from the existing 90 LPCD to 45 LPCD. The suburbs might get more water than the island city as per the new move of the BMC, as they are more densely populated.
Under the new norms, BMC plans to make adjustments to valves at points along the supply line, to make sure all areas get the same amount of water.
