Hyderabad metroHyderabad – As the construction of Hyderabad metro is gaining pace, a demand propped up by the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC) to construct the metro underground in some selected stretches so that no heritage sites of Hyderabad get affected.

This request of letter was sent by HCC chairman and former Union environment secretary to Chief Secretary seven days back. The selected heritage stretches where the metro should be taken underground are Rasoolpura junction to Moazamjahi market and the Charminar precinct. The letter also pointed out that underground metro was built at some stretches in various cities for such kind of reasons. These cities are New Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) highlighted the problems like safety and stone cutting for not opting underground proposal. But, HCC told that metro department has all required technology and engineers available to cut through stones etc. These are the same engineers who showed their knowledge and courage in one of their biggest achievements i.e the Konkan railway.

In December 2011, HCC also raised this issue via sending a letter to principal secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department. This letter also showed the concern of HCC members towards the protection of heritage structures of Hyderabad city.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project will run along three corridors which also includes nine heritage structures along it. The HMRL officials claimed that none of these structures will be affected or removed during the construction of the metro. They also said that the underground metro will increase traffic. However, as per HCC chairman and former Union environment secretary, citizens will face problem in both cases whether the construction goes underground or elevated.

A proper research of impact of heritage structures was not done by HMRL because many structures like Darulshifa, the Royal Mosque of Public Gardens, Vilayath Manzil, Princess Esin Women’s Educational Centre, Tomb of Fakhrul Mulk, the Fateh Maidan clock tower, Assembly building, Residency Complex (Koti Women’s college) were not mentioned in the list.

It is mandatory to take permission from HCC for any work at Charminar and Falaknuma. However, HMPL has still not submitted any report in this regard.
