Building 20km of road a day not sustainable – NHAI cheif
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said that the plan of building 20 km of road a day by the UPA II government will not be sustainable due to the delay in environment clearance and land acquisition issues.
NHAI chief said that raising equity was the main concern for the road project of 10,000 km in a year which includes 7000 km of national highways. The total investment needed is around Rs 90,000 crore of which Rs 30,000 crore should be from private equity.
NHAI has barely managed to award about 1,000 km of contracts so far this fiscal as against a target of 9,500 km fixed by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry. Seeing this NHAI chief told, if the government manages to maintain the current rate, it will be able to achieve 60 percent of the target.
However, private developers have not shown any interest in bidding for highways projects.
