Chennai Corporation evicts residents from Nehru Stadium
Chennai- To ease the construction of more tracks for Asian Athletics Championship, Chennai Corporation legally expelled the residents from the land near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on January 19, 2013.
The civic body claimed that the families were only shifted after due enumeration and they were also provided Aadhar card.
In August 2013, Chennai will host the Asian Athletics Championship. For this purpose Chennai Corporation is giving eight-acre of land after eviction to the Sports Development Authority of the Tamil Nadu state. An amount of Rs 40 crore will be used to renovate the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
Many residents who were shifted to Kannagi Nagar resisted and claimed that they were not provided any other option for accommodation.
Corporation will conduct another round of enumeration for eligible residents to provide alternative accommodation. Few residents questioned the timing and logic of this act. They feel that corporation should have started this after March 2013. Member of Unorganized Workers Federation pointed out the problem of water supply at Kannagi nagar.
The Corporation also assured that the children of these families will be transferred to nearest government school at earliest. People were only shifted to Kannagi Nagar after the verification of Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB). Around 152 families were shifted for the construction purpose. Two adults of each family are provided with free bus passes for two years which is a part of rehabilitation measures.
Fresh ration card will also be issued within a week. Even 5 kg of rice, one kg of cooking oil and one kg of dhal was also provided to them.
