road constructionChennai- Finally the construction work of storm water drains across 20 key stretches will be resumed within this week.

This project in Chennai was funded by Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). It was delayed for a long time as traffic police had fear of traffic congestion due to digging work at roads. But now they have given a green signal to Chennai Corporation to resume the construction work of this project.

In this regard, a meeting was held between Corporation officials and traffic police to sort out all issues. Although traffic police has given a nod but there will be some traffic restrictions along some stretches.

This project was devised by the civic body and Public Works Department (PWD) with an aim to manage flood before next monsoon at several zones across the city by reducing inundation.

The initial cost of this project was estimated as Rs 1447.91 crore. Seven stretches have been dropped out but the cost has not reduced. This is because the delay factor balanced it and added more cost to the original cost. Currently, the revised cost of this project is around Rs 1475.43 crore.

Accorded roads include TTK Road, Eldams Road, Kalki Krishnamurthy Salai, Dr. Muthulakshmi Salai, New Avadi Road, Cooks Road, MTH Road, Prakasam Salai, Anna Pillai Street and Pulianthope High Road. There are several stretches in city where traffic will be diverted next week.

These stretches include the stretch linking Kalakshetra Main Road to Thiruvanmiyur signal, Third Avenue Indira Nagar to West Avenue, LB Road First Street to Third Avenue Indira Nagar Adyar Signal to First Avenue Sastri Nagar, Villivakkam Bus Stand to MTH Road, Perambur High Road to Otteri Nullah and Davidson Street to Mint Street. According to the officials, the work on a stretch will begin this week. He added that construction work will be done whole day with no heavy machinery deployed at night.

Earlier, traffic police use to disturb contractors working on the sites. This led to many struggles between the civic body officials and police at several sites. Police imposed restriction of not working more than four hours at night along many stretches. Contractors stopped working at the sites as they required more time.

The Chennai corporation extended its deadline for the completion of project in January 2013. This extension of deadline was accepted as the civic body cited many reasons like monsoon, scarcity of sand, police restrictions and the difficulty in shifting utility lines.
