Chennai gets two more desalination plants

Desalination plants in ChennaiChennai- The chief minister of Tamil Nadu has announced to set up two mega desalination plants in Chennai. A total amount of Rs 2,200 crore has been allocated to these plants, roads and street lights in city and its extended areas.

The two desalination plants will come up at Nemmeli and Pattipulam. The desalination plant at Pattipulam will have a capacity of 200 MLD and would be increased to 400 MLD in future. It would be completed in a span of four years.

Nemmeli will get second desalination plant with a capacity of 150 million litres per day (MLD). It will be set up on 10.50 acre vacant land near the existing desalination plant in Nemmeli at an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore.

The second plant at Nemmeli will fulfill the water requirements of 6.46 lakh people in South Chennai. It will benefit people of Alandur, Perungudi, Kottivakkam, Puzhuthivakkam, Pallikaranai, Madipakkam, Shozhinganallur, Karapakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Chemmenchery, Uthandi and Okkiyam-Thuraipakkam.

The existing Nemmeli desalination plant is the second desalination plant in the city which is set up in Nemmeli along East Coast Road. It is constructed by V A Tech Wabag Ltd in association with Israel-based IDE Technologies. It is owned and commissioned by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, commonly known as Chennai Metro Water.

The plant is successfully quenching thirst of many residents of South Chennai in last one month. It has a capacity to treat and supply 100 million litres of day (mld). The Rs 871.24-crore Nemelli plant was inaugurated on February, 2013.

Similar kind of plant is situated in Minjur, Chennai. It is being operated by Chennai Water Desalination Limited on DBOOT (design, build, own, operate, transfer) mode.

A 303.78-crore drinking water scheme has also been announced under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan to supply water through taps in Idayanchavadi, Chadayankuppam, Kadapakkam, Manali, Soorapattu, Chinnasekkadu, Mugalivakkam, Perungudi and Palavakkam.

The Chief Minister also unveiled a Rs. 121 crore sewerage project in Kathirvedu, Soorapattu, Nolambur and Mugalivakkam.

The extended areas of Chennai city will get 1,10,000 lights at a cost of Rs. 300 crore. Storm water drainage, street lights, footpaths, and ducts for the services sector would also be laid in 900 roads covering 225 km at a cost of Rs. 290 crore.
