Chennai needs better technology for garbage dump yards
Chennai- The city’s dumping yards- Perungudi and Kodungaiyur- filled with smoke, stench, pollution, illness, dislocation and protest have become a view of distress.
The Chennai Corporation is in the final stage of finding a way out to its problem of garbage accumulation. People residing in localities in the vicinity of dumping yards forced the civic body to solve the issues within a short span of time.
Consequently, the civic bodies chose to swing from plan of a careful collection of waste and innovative safe transport to increasing of dumping yards. The civic machinery is focused on soothing the angry residents, as a result of which, road construction work inside the dumping yard will soon be done and vacant green patches will soon be piled with garbage dumps.
This is further expected to result in groundwater contamination because of seepages, as the civic body has not constructed concrete structures around the landfill as per environmental safety measures.
In cities such as Mumbai, garbage is compacted into dry cakes after separating leachate at the transfer station. The water is then treated and reused. The garbage cakes are placed in a proper arrangement in the dumping yards, preventing uncontrolled pollution of groundwater.
Chennai needs similar technology to handle over 4,500 tonnes of garbage generated in a day. However, utilizing the technology to handle garbage is the only hope for residents who want remediation and closure of the existing dumping yards.
