Civic panel rejects property, water tax hike proposal

taxNashik-  Last week, the Nashik Municipal Corporation standing committee  rejected the property and water tax hike for all the residential areas. This hike was proposed by the municipal commissioner following the civic Budget 2013-14. However other proposals were approved by the standing committee based on few amendments.

A draft budget of Rs. 1,556.80 crore was  presented by the administration to the standing committee chairman. A meeting held by the standing committee was held to discuss the budget presented by the municipal commissioner.

A proposal of 10 percent hike in tax for the properties in Nashik and a hike of 8 percent in the water tax for the residential units was proposed by the administration. However, the proposal was rejected by the panel concerning the hike and the rest of the budget proposals were approved based on few amendments by the committee.

Previously, a member from the Shiv Sena stated that they strongly oppose the property tax and water tax hike. However, only 60 percent of the water being supplied has been taxed with the rest 40 percent being unaccounted. Owing to this, the civic administration should take efforts to recover the cent per cent water taxes rather than increasing the taxes. Further, the NMC should undertake the technique of rainwater harvesting and other water saving techniques.

There were many other members who opposed the hike proposals. The standing committee during the budgetary discussion made few suggestions of surveying the properties, safety training for women, child welfare, one time property tax, audit of tree plantation, multi-level parking and others for the smooth functioning of the  area.
