Commerce ministry sighting proposals to revive SEZs
Narendra Modi has made a conscious decision to give commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman a foot in the finance ministry as well for a reason. The main reason is to try and make sure that bitter turf wars that have existed in between the two sides could be resolved to the mutual benefit of all concerned. If not this can end up resulting in mutually assured damage.
Since two months into the government’s term, she finds herself caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place, more specifically in the special economic zones. Nirmala Sitharaman is the minister of state for commerce with independent charge while as minister of state for finance and company affair. She has a boss in cabinet minister Arun Jaitley.
In the last week of June, the commerce ministry has thought and revived a proposal. The proposal that has been sighted will permit dual use of non-processing areas in the SEZs. This is mainly a part of efforts to revive these SEZs. Hopefully this new plan will help in reviving the Special Economic Zone which had been expressed as a matter of concern in the 2014 Union Budget.
