Contaminated Water led to rise in Viral Cases in Sector 56 Gurgaon

No Comments Sub Category:Community,Municipality Posted On: Aug 03, 2011

Residents of Sector 56, Gurgaon have started drinking bottled water because the water from the tap is so dirty that even purifiers can’t filter it. Every other person in the neighborhood is falling sick. Open pools of sewage in the vacant plots are also poisoning groundwater. This has led to contamination of drinking water and the number of people suffering from waterborne diseases has gone up by about 50% in the past few weeks.

Contaminated drinking water and disposal of sewage in open areas have led to a rise in the number of viral cases in Sector 56. The residents have complained that garbage is being dumped in the green belt leading to breeding of mosquitoes. What makes the situation worse is the fact that there are several breaches in the water pipeline that connects the group housing societies in the locality.

Apart from plotted areas, group housing societies like C-DoT apartments, HUDA CGHS colony, Sushant Lok II D block and other adjoining colonies have reported contamination of drinking water. According to the resident, despite repeated complaints, HUDA has not acted upon yet.

Another problem is foul smell. Naveen Kalingan, a resident of HUDA CGHS colony and an RWA member, said, “We have complained to HUDA several times, but nothing has been done so far. After the MCG elections, we have been regularly approaching the corporators who themselves claim to be helpless,” he said.

When asked, HUDA authorities claimed that the problem occurred because of blockage on the master drain.”The sewage is overflowing because of the choked sewage line. The work started late because a portion of the land was under the court stay. The cleaning of the master drain is going on and the problem would be resolved soon,” said a senior HUDA official.
