Road developmentDelhi- The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has planned to build a new 5.5 km arterial road almost next to the Bus Rapid Transit corridor.

The project cost is estimated to be around Rs 233 crore. It was envisaged to start in 2007 but failed to be executed. It also plans to create parking place for 3000-odd vehicles. The construction of road is estimated to be completed by March 2014.

The four-lane road, being developed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, will connect Press Enclave road to Ring Road at Andrews Ganj, passing through Sheikh Sarai, Chirag Delhi, Panchsheel Enclave and Greater Kailash-I. The Chirag Dilli nullah will be covered and road will be constructed over it. The drain-covering work has already been started at Sanwal Nagar.

Once the road is ready, it is expected that there will be no traffic jams on BRT. Parking problems in the stretch will also find a relief. Parking lots will be developed along the road after making a study in order to understand the demand for parking at various points. Entry to these parking areas will be provided through colonies along the road, so that there will be no parking-related traffic issues. Entry of heavy vehicles will also be restricted, said a senior official of South Corporation.

Though the project was envisaged in 2007, it was approved only in December 2009. And since then the project has being doing rounds to get approvals from various departments. Now all the approvals are in place and once the drain is covered, the road construction will be kicked off.

Political disagreements, credit-taking and lethargic attitude of the corporation has put this work on hold for three years. Central government, state government and the civic body are all involved in the project and they will bear 35%, 15% and 50% of the project cost, respectively.

According to official sources, many parks will be developed along the stretch and around Rs 18 crore has been spent on the project till now. Foundation stone for the project has already been laid and the project is expected to be completed by 2014.
