Two highway projects for road widening in Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha have got approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).
The two projects approved by the CCEA include widening of Patna-Gaya-Dobhi section on NH-83 in Bihar project and Baharagora-Sambalpur stretch in Odisha and Jharkhand. As per official records, the total project cost is estimated to be Rs 5,652.03 crore, while the Bihar project includes Rs 3636.43 crore and the cost of the latter project includes Rs 2015.60 crore.
Four laning of the Bihar project will be done with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – ODA Loan Assistance.
The road widening of the 127 km stretch, which is a part of the Buddhist Circuit, is expected to include total cost of Rs 2015.60 crore. The road will also serve as a link road to the proposed Nalanda University at Rajgir. The cost estimate includes cost of land acquisition, pre-construction activities, civil construction, supervision works and rehabilitation works.
The Japanese government is ready to fund the project of widening of road that starts from NH-30 at Patna and ends at junction of NH-83 and NH-2 (Golden Quadrilateral) at Dhobi through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project will be completed within three years from the agreement date.
The proposed road will provide smooth connectivity to Gaya/Bodhgaya, Rajgir and Nalanda both from Patna. It also connects the East-West corridor and Golden Quadrilateral at Dhobi on NH-2. It will provide substantial economic gain as it reduces travel time and brings down vehicle operating costs.
The road project of 368.20 km Baharagora-Sambalpur section of NH-6 in the Odisha and Jharkhand will be taken up under National Highways Development Project (NHDP) Phase IV on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. And the cost estimate for the project including land acquisition, rehabilitation and pre-construction activities is around Rs 3636.43 crore.
These road development projects are expected to speed up the improvement of infrastructure in both the states. The projects will also reduce the time and cost of travel for traffic and particularly heavy traffic plying between Baharagora and Sambalpur. NH-6 is a major link that connects Kolkata (West Bengal) to Hazira Port (Gujarat).
