Delay in developing high-speed rail link to BIA

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Realty News Posted On: Dec 20, 2012

Bangalore – The proposed high-speed rail link to the Bangalore International Airport from the MG Road has been put to pause for long.

The project, proposed in 2007, was estimated to include a budget of Rs 4,000 crore. The high-speed rail connectivity from the airport to MG Road was considered to be the only alternative to the road.

The Karnataka government had set up the Bangalore Airport Rail Link Corporation (BARC) to take up the work and even spent several crores of rupees in preparing detailed project report and running the offices. After all these, ironically, the project has been completely neglected.

Even though BARC exists with senior civil servants, nothing has been been done with regard to the project. According to official sources, the BARC instead of working on metro rail, the corporation is working on mono rail and light rail proposals.

The state government has handed over the whole project to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation last year, alleged the source.

BMRC chief said that a report on feasibility study of the project has been sent to the Urban Development Department. He said the BMRC is waiting for government’s approval.

But according to other sources close to secretariat disclosed that BMRC is interested to develop a metro connectivity to the airport since it is difficult to implement high speed rail cutting across the city as it would disturb the Metro Rail alignment.

BMRC has suggested that a dedicated Metro service from Hebbal to Bangalore International Airport could be more feasible, said sources.
