Delhi Airport Metro to run 10 kmph faster
New Delhi: Delhi’s troubled high-speed airport metro which was reopened last week will now run with full swing. The Airport Metro’s speed has been increased by 10 kmph.
Earlier the trains on this line were allowed to run at a speed of 105 kmph. Owing to defects in the bearings supporting the track, in July 2012, the Airport Metro service was temporarily stopped. Later engineers found that there were significant leaks in parts of the tunnel section of the line.
After six months, a safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) was obtained and the line was reopened on January 21, but trains were made to run only at half their maximum speed.
And now, after a week they resumed operations, the speed of the Airport Metro has been increased to 60 kmph. Following a mandatory two-day inspection carried out by senior officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the speed of the Metro was revised. The entire length of 22.7 km of the line was inspected and it was considered fit to increase the speed of the Airport Metro, alleged DMRC Director.
Sources said that the CMRS while allowing the Airport Metro services to resume had said the speed of the trains could be increased by 10 kmph in steps.
It is stated in the clearance certificate by CMRS that further increase of speed in the Airport Metro section beyond 50 kmph and up to the proposed speed of the 80 kmph may be authorised by Director (Works), in steps of 10 kmph at a time on satisfactory train operation in the section for a reasonable period of time.
During inspection the officials monitored cracks in some of the ‘U’ girders and the tensions clamps. And during the earlier operations of the line, several tension clamps which were broken had been replaced. After reducing the speed from 105 kmph to 80 kmph, the rate of breaking reduced significantly. The reason for breaking is still being checked. The authority has to ensure that a large number of tension clamps need to be kept in stock for replacement.
Once the next detailed inspection is completed, the speed on the Airport Metro corridor is expected to be increased by another 10 kmph. The corridor will be kept under observation and the train movement at an enhanced speed will be observed. Based on the observations, the speed may be further increased, said the DMRC Director.
