Delhi govt apartments transform to new highrise skyscrapers

Old residential buildingAlmost all the rickety and stubby government buildings will be soon reconstructed to new high rise apartments and office blocks in Delhi. This is one of the biggest redevelopment exercises that will come up in the heart of Delhi since Independence.

The existing two storey structures will be rebuilt to 10-12 storey residential blocks which will be funded by leasing office space and will be a part of the redevelopment or sale of the land to private companies.

Sudhir Krishna, secretary in the ministry of Urban Development exclaimed that the cost of maintaining the old structures are going up day by day and moreover the land is not being used optimally. So the government colonies will be redeveloped into modern housing structures. The reconstructed structures will have amenities like parking space and neighbourhood shopping centers.

New Delhi Municipal Council, National Monuments Authority, Airports Authority with Sudhir Krishna are consulting about the redevelopment and would move ahead only after obtaining clearances from them. There are at least 30 such colonies for housing which was built during 1950s and 60s for the central government employees. This colonies occupy around 1,100 hectares of prime real estate in Delhi.

Almost 16.7 million people with hundreds coming to Delhi, it will soon witness an acute space crunch. Delhi will soon turn its look from British era colonies to towering skyscrapers.

The National Buildings Construction Corporation is dealing with all the construction activities of the houses. NCBC is already assigned to redevelop East Kidwai Nagar on the Ring Road across the All India Institute of Medical Science which is recently been approved by the Union Cabinet. East Kidwai Nagar has some 2,200 homes and around 4,700 new houses will be transformed in four to 12-storey buildings.
