Delhi HC not to lift ban on e-rickshaws, seeks proper regulations
On Tuesday, Delhi High Court said that it will not review the ban order which it had earlier issued against the plying of e-rickshaws in the national capital.
With the earlier order of the court having deemed that the plying of e-rickshaws in Delhi is illegal, the court has now refused to lift that ban. The judges of the Delhi High Court said on Tuesday that the plying of e-rickshaws cannot be permitted in the city till the time there are proper regulations in place for such a move.
In that connection the main petitioner Sikha Rai said that the court is apparently not against the plying of e-rickshaws per se, but it wants that the requisite regulations to permit e-rickshaw plying should be established.
According to the details shared by Rai, the issue related to e-rickshaw playing in Delhi will be taken up again on Friday; and the decision of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari about e-rickshaws will be put forth before the High Court.
It was on July 31 that the High Court had instructed the government to stop the plying of e-rickshaws in the city with immediate effect. A bench of justices BD Ahmed and S Mridul had said “Stop it as of now;” and had observed that “unregulated plying of vehicles on Delhi roads is prima facie a hazard to other traffic on road as well as the citizens.”
