Delhi Metro said in a Tuesday announcement that it has completed the boring of two twin tunnels on the Janakpuri (West)-Botanical Garden corridor. The announcement implies that the work on Phase III is currently in full swing, in the wake of its approaching 2016 completion deadline.

According to the announcement made by Delhi Metro, the two tunnels which have been completed include the two parallel tunnels at Dabri Mor.

The completion of the two tunnels was accomplished with the help of two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) — ‘Riddhi’ and ‘Siddhi.’ One of these two TBMs was inserted for the tunnel-boring work in December 2013; while the other TBM was brought into action in January 2014.

The two mentioned tunnels are the first tunnels to be completed by Delhi Metro on the Janakpuri (West)-Botanical Garden corridor. After completing the boring of the two 1.2km long twin tunnels, the two TBMs emerged at the Dabri Mor station.

Pointing out that the boring of the two tunnels marks “the first occasion that twin tunnels have been completed together in any Metro project in India,” Anuj Dayal – spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation – said: “The decision to go for a twin TBM breakthrough was taken since both TBMs were progressing almost simultaneously.”
