1 Comment Sub Category:Delhi-NCR,Infrastructure,Realty News Posted On: Feb 05, 2013

Monorail projectDelhi- North India’s first monorail project seems to get clearance by the state cabinet shortly. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit directed the Transport department to table the proposal in the next meeting of the Delhi Cabinet.

The 11-km-long monorail project of Delhi government, from Shastri Park Metro Station to Trilokpuri has been planned to have 12 stations. The Delhi Metro has reviewed and approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and would implement the project soon.

The 12 stations have been planned in Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri.

The project work is expected to start in March and the line would be commissioned in 2017  at a cost of Rs 2,235 crore. As per plan, a contractor will be chosen and he will initiate the work within the next few months.

Several issues related to this project were discussed in a recent meeting in which a detailed presentation on the monorail project was given by DMRC Managing Director.

Official sources said that once the Delhi Cabinet gives green signal to the project, it would be forwarded to the Union Government seeking approval from the Group of Ministers. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which is currently funding Delhi Metro projects has agreed for funding the monorail project too.

Initially, the monorail corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers every day. It will have three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri thereby providing connectivity with the existing Dilshad Garden-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar under Phase-III of Metro.

Three-coach monorail trains will be scheduled to run at a frequency of 4 minutes 30 seconds at the initial stage. The frequency will be increased to 2 minutes 30 seconds later. Monorail trains will run at a speed of 80 kmph. Official sources said that the fare for monorail would be similar to that of metro.

Delhi government has taken up monorail project in a view of taking public transport to doorsteps of people living in congested colonies where mass rapid transport like Metro cannot be constructed. Moreover, this would change the scenario of public transport in East Delhi, where, at present, buses are the only mode of transport.
