Delhi to get 500 concrete roads

Bad roadsNew Delhi- Public Works Department (PWD) is all set to lay around 500 concrete roads in the city on a move to improve the lifespan of stretches prone to water logging.

Najafgarh-Nangloi, Uttam Nagar-Najafgarh and Rama Road near Karol Bagh are among the main stretches of the 500 roads, while rest of them are small stretches in various colonies. Most of the roads were under the municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD), but were announced in jurisdiction of PWD in 2012.

PWD claims that water logging issue persists in most of the roads during monsoons and the bitumen (tar/asphalt) gets damaged easily. The cost of carpeting roads with concrete is almost double that of asphalt roads.

It is estimated that laying of one kilometer of concrete road is estimated to cost Rs 6 crore while it would cost Rs 3 crore for a bitumen road. Although they are costly, concrete roads are most viable in the long run, say experts. The laying of such roads would cost around 25 percent more in colonies and 30 percent more along highways. The total budget estimated for this project is around Rs 1,800 crore.

The concrete roads can survive for at least 20 to 25 years, which is five times longer than asphalt roads. During water logging, concrete roads gain strength as it improves its compactness. Extra care is required only during the first month.

The issue with concrete road is that it increases the road level due to which it is mostly preferred for roads that are laid in low lying areas. It is generally decided by experts after looking at site condition.

The stretch between Najafgarh-Nangloi has numerous potholes and the commuters along the stretch have been facing problem for a long time. Although there was some repair work taken up around six months ago that was of lower quality as described by commuters.

PWD is relaying the Under Hill Road in Civil Lines with concrete as it often faces waterlogging issue. The road is planned to be at the level of the footpath and the road work is likely to be completed in a quarter. The Delhi government has made sure that all roads within corporation are improved and upgraded with signages, street lights and storm water drainage.
